About Diamonds and Brilliant Cut
Diamond:
A diamond is a mineral composed of pure carbon. It is the hardest naturally occurring substance known, extracted from mines and cut by experts. The diamond’s exceptional hardness (it’s the only substance that can scratch another diamond) makes it an ideal choice for industrial and goldsmithing applications. Its unparalleled brilliance and ability to refract light into a rainbow spectrum are other features of this precious stone that significantly increase its value. Variety, durability, beauty, and premium quality have made diamonds one of the most popular gemstones worldwide.
Brilliant Cut:
Brilliant cut refers to a specific type of diamond cut, also known as the “Swiss cut.” Today, the primary goal in brilliant cutting is to maximize the visual effects and brilliance of the diamond. This is achieved through precise adjustment of angles and facets to ensure incoming light interacts with the maximum number of surfaces and reflects to the viewer’s eye. Scientists and major institutions in the US and Belgium are continuously developing new standards to improve diamond cutting quality.
The standard brilliant cut consists of three main parts:
Crown: The upper part of the stone.
Pavilion: The lower part of the stone.
Girdle: The facet separating the crown and the pavilion.
These three parts collectively comprise 58 facets, created using precise lasers. The pointed bottom facet of the brilliant cut is called the Culet, which serves to protect the stone’s base from impact. In some cuts, this facet is omitted, and the stone is made completely pointed, known as a Full Cut, resulting in a 57-facet diamond.
