Brilliant in French refers to a type of cut performed on a diamond stone. This type of cut is known as the "Swiss cut," which was used in the past for various types of stones. In the brilliant cut today, efforts are made to display the visual aspects of the diamond stone more than before and to adjust the angles and type of cut so that the light entering the diamond stone hits more plates of the stone and finally reaches our eyes. To achieve this, scientists at major institutes in America and Belgium always try to improve the type of diamond cut and present new standards for this work year by year. In principle, all diamond cuts, whether traditional or with the help of advanced devices, must be done observing these standards. The brilliant cut consists of three parts which cause the brilliance and beauty of this small stone to increase. These three parts include: the Crown, the Girdle, and the Pavilion, where the girdle is actually the separating plate between the two upper parts, i.e., the crown, and the lower part, i.e., the pavilion. Each of the upper and lower sections consists of different triangular, rhombus, or kite-shaped facets, which create a total of 58 facets. These facets are created on the diamond by precise laser cuts and are called "Facets" in gemology terminology. At the final and sharp point of the brilliant, a Facet is also created called the "Culet" and is to protect the final part of the brilliant cut diamond against impact and breakage. In some brilliant cuts, this facet is removed and this part is made completely sharp, which is called "Full Cut" for such cuts, in which case a brilliant with 57 facets is created.
Ruby or "Bahram" is a type of red, crystalline corundum which is considered the hardest mineral after diamond. The hardness of ruby is 9 on the Mohs scale. Corundum is a mineral of igneous and metamorphic rocks and is considered a type of alumina (aluminum oxide) which may contain a small amount of impurities from elements such as titanium, copper, manganese, chromium, and iron. The presence of these impurities causes different colors such as blue, yellow, purple, pink, orange, and red in corundum. Corundums that have a color other than red and pink are called "Blue Sapphire," and red and pink corundums are known as "Red Ruby." Pink in blood color, red is a precious stone; various types of emery mineral (aluminum oxide) and other types of jewelry-quality corundum are called sapphire. Ruby, along with amethyst, sapphire, emerald, and diamond, is one of the main gemstones. Most of the world's rubies are located in countries such as Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Greenland, and Afghanistan, and the finest ones are found in the Mogok Valley in Myanmar. The Greeks believed that this stone gave its owner special powers including health, knowledge, wealth, and success in love. Based on the belief of ancestors, all gems melt in fire except Roman ruby. Mohammad bin Mahmoud Hamadani says in the book "Ajayeb-nameh" about ruby: "Its nature is hot and dry, of the fourth degree. Whoever carries it with them is safe from the plague. Ruby is heavier than gold and lead. Its mine is Mount Rohun in Sarandib (Sri Lanka) where Adam descended, and it is in the middle of the sea. Whoever carries ruby with them, the blood in their body becomes pure, and they are safe from lethargy, stroke, and epilepsy."
