Diamond:
Diamond is a mineral composed of pure carbon, and it is the hardest naturally occurring substance in the world. It is extracted from mines and cut by skilled and expert craftspeople. This precious mineral, originating from the element carbon, possesses high hardness, which has led to its use in industry and goldsmithing. Its hardness is so significant that it can only be scratched by another diamond. Other notable characteristics of diamonds include their unparalleled brilliance and their ability to reflect light into a rainbow spectrum. This light reflection creates the diamond’s sparkle, adding to its value as a precious gemstone. The renown of natural diamonds stems from their diversity, durability, beauty, and superior quality, making them among the most popular gemstones globally.
Brilliant Cut:
“Brilliant” in French refers to a type of cut performed on a diamond gemstone. This cut is also known as the “Swiss cut,” historically used for various types of stones. In modern brilliant cutting, the aim is to maximize the visual effects and brilliance of the diamond. The angles and cutting methods are precisely adjusted so that incoming light interacts with the maximum number of stone facets before reflecting to the viewer’s eye. To achieve this, scientists and major institutions in the US and Belgium continually strive to improve diamond cutting quality, introducing new standards annually. In essence, all diamond cuts, whether traditional or using advanced machinery, must adhere to these standards. The brilliant cut is composed of three main sections that enhance the sparkle and beauty of this small gem: the Crown (upper section), the Girdle (the separating facet between the upper and lower sections), and the Pavilion (lower section). Each of the upper and lower sections is formed from various triangular, diamond, or kite-shaped facets, totaling 58 facets. These facets, known in gemology as “faset” (facet), are created on the diamond through precise laser cutting. At the bottom tip of the brilliant cut, an additional facet is created called the Culet, which protects the bottom of the diamond from impact and breakage. In some brilliant cuts, this facet is omitted, and the bottom is made completely pointed. These are known as “Full Cut” brilliant cuts, resulting in a diamond with 57 facets.
